North Rhine-Westphalia Schools Introduce VR Tutorials Through Collaborative Project

Schools in Wuppertal, Remscheid, and Solingen are set to benefit from a new initiative, as these cities have collaborated to produce a Virtual Reality (VR) tutorial for schools as part of the nationwide project "Digital Making Places" in North Rhine-Westphalia.

The project, funded by the "Digital Pact School" and accompanied by the Ministry of School and Education, aims to encourage schools and teachers to try out innovative digital media and technologies in the classroom.

The Wuppertal Center for Digital Education has six VR kits with a total of 40 VR headsets, which can be borrowed by schools. These kits are secured in a case for safe transportation. Schools can learn about the VR headsets and submit a loan request at the Center for Digital Education or via the NRW Education Media Library.

Teachers have access to a corresponding online portal through the NRW Education Media Library to select from various film content and applications. The VR tutorial provides a detailed guide for handling and using VR headsets in a school context, including practical tips for safe and responsible use.

The project's goal is to open up diverse possibilities for students, both interdisciplinary and in the context of career orientation. Students can use the VR headsets to learn about various subjects, such as the function of important organs, ancient Egypt, or underwater journeys through the oceans.

Arzum Erik, the city's media pedagogue, explains that the use of VR headsets in the classroom opens up a world of opportunities. He further emphasizes that this technology can significantly enhance the learning experience, making it more interactive and engaging for students.

The Center for Digital Education will continuously expand the offer by providing more digital technologies and playful offers to promote students' media competence, such as programmable robots like the Blue-Bot. This initiative is part of North Rhine-Westphalia's broader educational digitalization strategy, which includes supporting schools with technology like VR for experiential learning.

For schools interested in borrowing VR kits and accessing related resources, they should typically contact the project's coordinating body or local education authorities involved in "Digital Making Places" to request loan kits and training resources. These resources often include VR headsets, software, curricular guides, and workshops for teachers to integrate digital making and VR into their lessons effectively.

North Rhine-Westphalia emphasizes developing its digital infrastructure broadly to benefit education, with many regional initiatives supporting such technological access in schools. For concrete access, schools from Wuppertal, Remscheid, and Solingen should approach their local education offices or relevant digital education coordinators linked to the "Digital Making Places" project to learn about availability, borrowing procedures, and support materials.

  1. The Virtual Reality tutorial, introduced as part of the "Digital Making Places" project in North Rhine-Westphalia, combines technology and education-and-self-development, offering students a unique learning experience.
  2. By providing VR headsets and accessible digital resources, the project encourages schools to integrate learning, technology, and self-development, fostering a more interactive and engaging educational environment.
