Vietnam secures fifth place with six medals at the 2025 Asia-Pacific Computing Olympics
VIETNAM - Six students from the Vietnamese national team shone at the 2025 Asia-Pacific Informatics Olympiad (APIO) held in Uzbekistan, with each of them earning medals, securing the country a fifth-place finish overall.
The team's impressive performance saw one student win a gold medal, two take silver, and three more receive bronze. Specifically, Nguyen Bui Duc Dung, an 11th-grader from the High School for Gifted Students in Natural Sciences under the University of Science of the Việt Nam National University, Hà Nội, clinched the gold medal with a score of 236 out of 300, achieving maximum marks in two papers and sharing the top score in Paper 1 with only two other contestants.
Le Kien Thanh, a 12th-grader from the Lè Quý Đôn High School for Gifted Students in Bình Định Province, and Dang Huy Hau, a 10th-grader from the Thaăg Long High School for Gifted Students in Lâm Đồng Province, each earned silver medals. Dang Huy Hau's unique solution in the third event won him a perfect score and the silver medal.
In addition, Ninh Quang Thang (12th grade, Hạ Long High School for Gifted Students, Quảng Ninh Province), Nguyen Huy Phong (11th grade, Lào Cai High School for Gifted Students, Lào Cai Province), and Nguyen Xuan Chi Thanh (11th grade, High School for Gifted Students in Natural Sciences, VNU University of Science in Hà Nội) all received bronze medals.
Hosted by Uzbekistan, the 19th edition of the APIO drew 868 contestants from 42 countries and territories, making it a competition of global standing. Vietnam completed the tournament in fifth place, behind China, Russia, Japan, and the Republic of Korea, emphasizing the nation's strong foundation in computer science and its leading position in informatics contests in Southeast Asia.
