  1. Eager Beavers (LLM group): These lucky souls were ordered to utilize ChatGPT exclusively for their assignments, shunning any other websites or tools.
  2. The Googlers (Search group): These eager folks were granted access to any website except the ones that offered AI-assisted answers.
  3. Back to Basics (Brain-only group): Relying solely on their own intellect to complete tasks.

Across three sessions, these groups were tasked with writing an essay on topics that would change every time. For instance, one topic posed the question, "Do works of art have the power to change people's lives?"

During the essay-writing spree, participants wore Enobio headsets to record EEG signals from their brains. The groups also swapped places during a fourth session to evaluate any lasting effects of previous sessions.

The results? Brain-only writers demonstrated the most widespread and engaging brain activity during tasks, routinely completing the tasks more slowly yet showing greater cognitive involvements, creativity, and unique writing styles.

The Lost Generation: The Rise of AI-Zombies

However, the LLM group revealed a striking pattern. Over time, they engaged less and less with the task, increasingly reliant on ChatGPT with each session. They felt considerably less ownership over the results and struggled to recollect or quote their work correctly, indicating a notable weakening of long-term memory formation. This trend is unnervingly denoted as "metacognitive laziness."

But the most disquieting discovery occurred in the fourth session. The LLM and Brain-only groups switched places, and the previous LLM group failed to fully bounce back to their pre-LLM brain activity levels measured before the study.
