University of Hong Kong contemplates downsizing development area following public criticism
The University of Hong Kong (HKU) has announced a significant revision to its Global Innovation Centre project, following concerns raised by the local community and environmental activists. The university aims to reduce the size of the development by 15 percent, scaling down the site area by approximately 7,000 square meters, equivalent to 16 to 17 basketball courts.
The original plan for the project, which was to be built on 4.72 hectares (11.66 acres) of government-owned green belt along Pok Fu Lam Road, had faced strong opposition from over 3,000 residents in the Southern district. Concerns included environmental damage and increased traffic impact, with some even threatening legal action.
In response to these concerns, HKU is considering building on a nearby residential plot to further accommodate the project needs. The revised proposal, which leaves most of the Pok Fu Lam green belt untouched, is scheduled for discussion at an upcoming town planning board meeting.
This reduction in project size addresses the initial concerns over the clearing of over 2,000 trees that was planned for the original site. The university's efforts to balance development ambitions with community and environmental concerns are commendable, as they aim to foster academic and scientific research while minimising negative impacts.
