University of Halle granted accreditation for 'family-focused educational institution' once more

In a ceremony held in Berlin yesterday, Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU) was awarded the "family-friendly university" certificate for the fifth consecutive time. The honour was presented by Mareike Wulf, Parliamentary State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Families.

The MLU's commitment to family-friendly working and study conditions has been consistently demonstrated over the years, with a focus on five thematic areas: family-friendly working and study conditions, life phase-oriented human resource development, sustainable structural anchoring, family-related services, and penetration in all organisational units.

The "family-friendly university" audit, the central offering of the berufundfamilie Service GmbH, initiated by the Hertie Foundation, serves as a strategic management instrument, supporting employers in shaping family-friendly working, research, and study conditions sustainably.

The audit process at MLU involves evaluating the status quo of already offered family and life phase-conscious measures, systematically developing potential, and ensuring family awareness is deeply rooted in the university culture. Key aspects of the audit include the evaluation of university policies supporting work-family balance, such as flexible working hours and parental leave, assessment of childcare facilities and services on or near campus, support for academic and career advancement for parents, fostering a family-friendly campus culture, analysis of information and counseling services related to family matters, and monitoring the implementation and effectiveness of family-supportive measures.

After each three years, further personnel policy goals can be agreed upon in the context of re-audits. The goal of the dialogue procedure is to accompany the high level of development of family-friendly working and study conditions and to utilise optimization potential in selected areas.

The MLU successfully completed the dialogue procedure for the first time in 2018, and after successfully completing the audit process, an independently staffed committee decides on the award of the audit certificate.

Federal Minister for Families, Karin Prien, holds the patronage for the audit. Rector Prof. Dr. Claudia Becker received the certificate, reaffirming MLU's dedication to promoting family-friendly conditions for its students and staff.

The Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU) continues to prioritize health-and-wellness in its workplace-wellness initiatives, as demonstrated by its focus on family-friendly working and study conditions. This commitment to wellness encompasses education-and-self-development, with the university utilizing the "family-friendly university" audit from berufundfamilie Service GmbH to shape family-friendly working, research, and study conditions sustainably.
