UN Sounds Alarm as Gaza Crisis Deepens: 500,000 Face Famine, 320,000 Displaced

The United Nations has expressed grave concern over the deteriorating situation in the Gaza Strip. The UN Human Rights Commission's spokesman, Stéphane Dujarric, released a statement on Tuesday regarding the allegedly attacked flotilla carrying aid to Gaza. Meanwhile, UN agencies warn of escalating attacks, mass displacement, and worsening hunger, with health services on the brink of collapse.

The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has condemned the Israeli military's tactics in Gaza City, stating they are inflicting terror and forcing people to flee. OHCHR spokesperson has called for an independent investigation into attacks and harassment of the Gaza-bound Global Sumud Flotilla. The UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) reports a shocking number of child casualties, with the highest per capita of child amputees worldwide.

The situation is dire, with over 500,000 people facing famine, including 390 deaths, 140 of whom are children, according to the UN Population Fund (UNFPA). The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reports that over 320,000 people have fled Gaza's biggest city since mid-August. Health services are collapsing, with a key clinic destroyed and staff injured. UN agencies warn of escalating attacks and mass displacement, with hunger worsening by the day.

UN human rights chief Volker Türk has urged Israel to urgently lift the blockade and allow lifesaving aid into Gaza. The international community is watching the situation closely, with calls for an independent investigation into the attacks and the humanitarian crisis unfolding in the Gaza Strip.
