UCLA Secures $1 Million Grant from Jerry Moss, Co-Founder of A&M Records, for Arts and Music Scholarships
UCLA's Moss Scholars Program Receives Major Boost
Jerry Moss, a renowned record executive and philanthropist, has donated $1 million to secure the future of UCLA's Moss Scholars program. This generous contribution was matched by a gift of $500,000 from the UCLA Chancellor's Centennial Scholars Match program, bringing the total donation to $1.5 million.
The Moss Scholars program, established at UCLA's School of the Arts and Architecture and the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music, provides full scholarships to art and music students. This program has already benefited 30 undergraduate and graduate students, including Refik Anadol, a media artist from Turkey.
Anadol credits the Moss Scholars program for making his dreams as a media artist possible. He earned his Master of Fine Arts degree from UCLA in 2014 and went on to create the multimedia installation "WDCH Dreams," which was displayed on the exterior of Walt Disney Concert Hall in the fall of 2018.
Moss, who co-founded A&M Records with Herb Alpert, the namesake of UCLA's school of music, is a patron and collector of contemporary art. He believes that art and music are global in nature and transcend boundaries. The Moss Scholars program aims to attract diverse creative voices and practices to UCLA.
The new donation and matching funds will create an endowment that ensures the program can continue in perpetuity. The UCLA graduate arts program, ranked No. 1 among U.S. public universities, will undoubtedly benefit from this generous contribution.
Every fall, Moss scholarship recipients gather for a lunch with Jerry Moss. Since the inception of the scholarship, Moss's donations have funded the program. The scholarships cover students' full tuition throughout their entire degree program at either of the two schools.
This donation is part of the Centennial Campaign for UCLA, scheduled to conclude in December 2019 during UCLA's 100th anniversary year. The program's value is particularly significant for international students due to additional travel and related costs.
For the most accurate and detailed information regarding the current significance and impact of this particular donation, consult UCLA's official announcements or news sources directly associated with the Moss Scholars program released after mid-2024.
The investment in the Moss Scholars program, totaling $1.5 million, supports online education and lifelong learning, particularly in the arts and music, fostering diverse voices and practices at UCLA. This endowment, established by Jerry Moss, will ensure the program's education-and-self-development opportunities continue indefinitely.
