U.S. to Revoke Visas for Chinese Students Tied to Communist Party

The U.S. government is planning to revoke the visas of Chinese students studying in America, particularly those with connections to the Communist Party. US Foreign Minister, Marco Rubio, made the announcement, stating that his department will collaborate with the Department of Homeland Security to implement this policy.

Details about the number of students potentially affected by the visa revocation are still unclear. However, Rubio's department aims to aggressively revoke the visas of students studying in critical fields or with links to the Chinese Communist Party. The criteria for future applicants from China and Hong Kong are also set to be revised and subjected to stricter scrutiny.

Tensions between China and the United States have escalated since the inauguration of President Donald Trump. The two economies are competing for influence on political, economic, and military levels and are currently embroiled in an aggressive trade dispute.

According to the Institute of International Education, around 277,000 Chinese students were enrolled at U.S. universities in the 2023/2024 academic year, making China the second-largest group of international students after India. Foreign students are a significant source of income for many U.S. universities, usually paying higher tuition fees than domestic students.

The U.S. government is also considering subjecting future foreign students and participants in exchange programs to stricter criteria. U.S. media report that the Department of State has instructed U.S. embassies and consulates worldwide to postpone new visa application appointments, citing an internal letter. Existing appointments are said to remain valid.

The categories affected by the planned measure include visas for students, exchange students, interns, au pairs, and others. Further instructions are expected in the near future, according to media reports from the document. The proposed measure is a response to the expanded review of social media activities of visa applicants.
