Two Generations Learning Side by Side

Changing Gears Together: A Father-Son Journey into Carpentry and Business

Father and son, Sigurður Brynjar Pálsson and Sölvi Steinn Sigurðsson, are turning the tables on their usual roles by learning the art of carpentry at FB's evening school. Having their shared passion for hands-on work, they're excited to construct a guesthouse at the family's summerhouse next summer.

The CEO Carpenter

Sigurður, the experienced CEO of BYKO, shares his love for building. "I always wanted to take on DIY tasks, especially at our summerhouse. Working with my hands and being creative brings me a sense of calm, away from the bustling corporate life," Sigurður explains. After honing his skills as a high school laborer for a construction contractor, life took him down a different path only to lead him back to his first love.

The Business-Carpentry Blend

Sölvi, a 21-year-old university student of business, matches his father's enthusiasm for hardwork. Though initially skeptical, he joined Sigurður in a spontaneous decision that turned into a satisfying bonding experience. "Juggling academics and hands-on skills can be demanding, but it's rewarding to have that dynamic blend," says Sölvi.

A New Perspective on Education

"It's a fantastic combo of mental and physical challenges. Carpentry allows me to disrupt the monotony of textbooks and immerse myself in tangible, intricate projects," Sölvi adds. Both father and son enjoy the synergistic learning experience.

A Dad, a Teacher, and a Co-student

Schooling together is a unique experience for the duo. "It's special and fun. Most often, parents offer advice, but this time, we're more like co-students. It's enjoyable and enlightening to see my father's creative side," Sölvi smiles. Sigurður reciprocates the sentiment, expressing the mutual growth they've experienced during their studies.

Exploring New Horizons

The carpentry program has been challenging and eye-opening for Sigurður, particularly the three-dimensional thinking, and basic drawing courses. New ideas and new friends have made this educational journey worthwhile. "I may chase the Master's degree after graduation, keeping the skills I've gained advantageous in my current role at BYKO and future projects at home," he says.

As their graduation nears in the fall of 2023, Sölvi remains open to the future. "Whether I continue to work in carpentry or not, the skills I've acquired will definitely come in handy," he says optimistically. The combined education as a father-son team has been a fulfilling and enjoyable adventure, opening up new possibilities as they build together.

  1. "Sigurður, in addition to his CEO role at BYKO, shares his passion for carpentry with his son, acknowledging that it offers him a calming respite from corporate life,"
  2. "Soëlvi, a business student like his father, finds Carpentry to be a refreshing contrast to his academics, recognizing the blend of mental and physical challenges it brings,"
  3. "In their shared carpentry lessons, they find unconventional wisdom, with Soëlvi appreciating the chance to witness his father's creative side as both co-students and companions,"
  4. "As they progress in their carpentry education, both Sigurður and Soëlvi explore the potential for further growth, with Sigurður considering pursuing a Master's degree to enhance his skills at BYKO and on their family's future home-and-garden projects,"
  5. "Looking ahead to the fall of 2023, Soëlvi maintains an open mind about his future, optimistic that the skills he's gained in this unique learning experience with his father will prove beneficial regardless of his specific career path in lifestyle, education-and-self-development, or otherwise."
