Train transition to G9 is underway, according to IHK - commence preparations immediately!
In the heart of North Rhine-Westphalia, the Rhein-Kreis Neuss is taking strides to ensure a prosperous future for its youth and businesses. Jürgen Steinmetz, CEO of the IHK (Chamber of Industry and Commerce), has called for forward-thinking action on the training market, as the region prepares for the transition from G8 to G9 next year.
The IHK Mittlerer Niederrhein is at the forefront of this initiative, offering various actions to bridge the gap between companies and young people. These include events like 'Check In Berufswelt' and trainee speed datings, aimed at bringing applicants and companies together, and promoting dual training.
The Municipal Coordination Office plays a crucial role in this endeavour, bundling and coordinating the implementation of the NRW state initiative 'No final exam without a follow-up' (KAoA) locally in the Rhein-Kreis Neuss. The zdi-Netzwerk Rhein-Kreis Neuss, or 'Future through Innovation', organises career and study-oriented measures in the fields of mathematics, computer science, natural sciences, and technology. Partners in this network include schools, companies, universities, and the Neuss Employment Agency, with the Wirtschaftsförderungsgesellschaft Rhein-Kreis Neuss mbH serving as the network's sponsor.
The district administration, led by Hans-Jürgen Petrauschke, stresses the importance of offering more training places in light of the upcoming transition. The employment agency for the Rhein-Kreis Neuss has reported 1,659 company-based training positions as of July 1, 2025, with 993 positions still available.
Meanwhile, the number of individuals interested in training has seen a slight increase, with 2,521 registering with the employment agency this year, compared to 2,211 last year. However, 1,069 of these individuals are still without a position.
Steinmetz appeals to politics and educational institutions to give dual training more focus. He encourages companies and young people to utilise the extensive service offers of the IHK for recruiting new trainees. With the 'Training Ambassadors' initiative, trainees and dual students trained by the IHK report on their profession in general education schools, providing insight and inspiration for the younger generation.
The 'Economy pro School' initiative further supports this cause, enabling schools to arrange school visit dates with training companies from various industries. This initiative aims to provide students with a first-hand look at the opportunities available in the world of work.
Despite these efforts, there is still a gap to be filled. With 74 fewer training positions available this year compared to the same time last year, there is a need for more companies to step forward and offer training opportunities. Steinmetz urges companies to seize this opportunity to invest in the future, not just of their business, but of the community as a whole.
