In a significant move to bolster academic collaboration and attract top talent, Western University in London, Ontario, has announced the launch of the US-CAN Doctoral Excellence Awards. This initiative aims to support outstanding doctoral candidates from U.S. universities ranked in the global top 100 to pursue their studies at Western University in Canada.

The awards are a merit-based opportunity intended to recognise and encourage academic excellence among prospective PhD students. By offering up to $160,000 CAD ($40,000 per year) for up to four years of study, the initiative aligns with Western’s broader commitment to recognising graduate-level research excellence.

The program targets students who have received an offer from or had an offer rescinded by a doctoral program at an American university ranked in the Top 100 QS Top Universities or the Top 100 Times Higher Education (THE). This move comes as many U.S. universities are finding their research funding slashed and have cut back on PhD admissions and financial support.

Kamran Siddiqui, Western University's vice-provost for graduate and postdoctoral studies, stated that Western offers a strong, supportive, and inclusive research environment. As part of a larger strategy, Western University is doubling its Postdoctoral Fellowship Program from 19 to 40 awards, offering a $70,000 annual stipend for two years, benefits, a small research allowance, and a $15,000 top-up for postdoctoral scholars holding federal awards.

This program complements Western's other merit-based awards for graduate students that celebrate academic distinction and research contributions, as exemplified by their graduate awards in philosophy and other disciplines. For more specific application criteria, deadlines, or benefits of this award, interested candidates are encouraged to reach out to Western University’s graduate programs or international recruitment offices.

The University of Toronto and University of Waterloo have also observed increased interest by U.S. students, indicating a broader trend of Canadian universities becoming a beacon for American graduate students seeking a supportive and research-focused environment. This shift comes amidst concerns over academic freedom and legal proceedings against international students at several U.S. universities.

As a founding member of the U15, a group of Canada's most distinguished research universities, Western University is well-positioned to provide a world-class research environment for its students. With over 2,500 doctoral students and 300 postdoctoral scholars, and more than 50 doctoral programs across the sciences, humanities, and social sciences, Western University offers a diverse and dynamic research landscape.

This strategic move by Western University is expected to further strengthen its position as a leading destination for top-tier graduate students from around the world.
