Tips for Advanced Professionals: Enhancing Your Skills Through Professional Development
In a recent webinar titled "The Winning Edge for Handling the APP Boom," HealthLeaders shared practical advice for health systems, hospitals, and medical groups looking to attract and retain advanced practice providers (APPs). The event was part of HealthLeaders' The Winning Edge series, an extension of the HealthLeaders Exchange program, an exclusive, executive community for sharing ideas, solutions, and insights.
Advanced practice providers, such as nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and clinical nurse specialists, are a vital workforce resource in the healthcare industry. With physician shortages prevalent in many specialties, the topic of the webinar was particularly relevant.
Three experts shared their insights during the webinar: Teresa Caulin-Glaser, MD, the executive vice president and chief clinical officer at OhioHealth; Debra Fournier, DNP, APRN, the chief advanced practice provider officer at Dartmouth Health; and Read Pierce, MD, CMO at Denver Health.
The four tips they offered for the practice of offering professional development measures for APPs included:
- Tailor training to specific APP roles to ensure it is relevant and valuable.
- Focus on practical, hands-on learning to help APPs apply new skills directly in their work.
- Incorporate interprofessional collaboration to foster teamwork and communication.
- Provide ongoing support and feedback to help APPs continue to grow and develop in their roles.
The infographic featured during the webinar summarised these four tips for offering professional development opportunities for advanced practice providers. Offering such opportunities is an effective strategy for retaining APPs, according to the experts.
