The Philippines Brings Unique Storytelling to the Largest International Book Fair through Imaginative Narratives
Frankfurt Book Fair Highlights Philippine Creativity
The Philippines is making a significant impact at the Frankfurt Book Fair, showcasing its vibrant creative economy and rich literary scene. The Philippine Guest of Honour Pavilion (PHL GOH) spans a substantial 2,000 square meters, housing over 500 Philippine book titles and serving as a hub for a variety of events.
Senator Loren Legarda, the primary driving force behind the Philippines' participation as Guest of Honour, has ensured a diverse and engaging programme. The theme of the PHL GOH Pavilion is "The imagination peoples the air," a fitting reflection of the Philippines' rich literary and artistic heritage.
Performers at the PHL GOH Pavilion include Morobeats, Justin and Janna Texon, Kuwerdas Filipinas, Akayu, and National Living Treasure Rosie Sula, offering a taste of Filipino music and culture. Nobel Peace Prize laureate Maria Ressa and trauma journalist Patricia Evangelista will hold talks, sharing insights on urgent global issues such as democracy and human rights.
The publishing industry plays a crucial role in visibility, opening markets for film, music, design, and tourism. The PHL GOH Pavilion will host over 100 talks, readings, and performances, including Komiks Live! which brings graphic novels to life at Romanfabrik.
The offsite literary program, curated by Karina Bolasco, includes readings, signings, conversations, discussions, workshops, and participation in German and Swiss literary festivals. The programme highlights include Jose on the Go: A Rizal Stroll with Ambeth Ocampo and Booked at Zentralbibliothek: Filipino Plot Twists.
The Philippines is partnering with German institutions and museums to showcase Philippine art, scholarship, and exhibitions on various topics. Liwaliw at Kulturforum, located in Hanau, offers visitors a taste of Filipino games, food, and music.
The NBDB's Translation Subsidy Program has supported the translation of 173 titles since 2024, a testament to the growing international interest in Philippine literature. In 2023, enterprises registered with the NBDB reported sales of ₱13.76 billion, a significant increase from 2020's all-time low sales of ₱4.97 billion.
The Philippine creative economy, valued at PhP 1.94 trillion in 2024, makes up 7.3 percent of the Philippine GDP. This growth is evident in the fast-paced schedule of events at the Frankfurt Book Fair, a testament to the Philippines' dynamic and thriving creative sector.
The lead persons for the PHL GOH project at the Frankfurt Book Fair 2025 have not been publicly specified, but the project is being curated and designed by Patrick Flores and Stanley Ruiz.
The Philippine Stand, the Asia Stage, and the Comics Stand also represent the Philippines at the Frankfurt Book Fair, offering a comprehensive showcase of the country's literary and artistic offerings. The Frankfurt Book Fair, running from October 14 to 18, promises to be a vibrant celebration of Philippine creativity.
