New Edition of DMBoK Embraces Modern Data Management Challenges

The latest edition of the Data Management Body of Knowledge (DMBoK) has been released, providing a comprehensive guide for data professionals navigating the evolving landscape of data management. This 600-page reference book now includes dedicated sections on data ethics, big data, and Data Management maturity assessment.

At the heart of the updated DMBoK is the Data Management Framework or DAMA Wheel, a new addition that illustrates the interconnection of different Data Management subjects. This framework consists of 11 knowledge areas, with Data Governance at the centre. The 11 knowledge areas covered are: Data Governance, Data Architecture, Data Modeling and Design, Data Storage and Operations, Data Security, Data Integration and Interoperability, Documents and Content, Reference and Master Data, Data Warehousing and Business Intelligence, Metadata, and Data Quality.

These areas form the foundational data management framework, as defined by DAMA, and are tested in certifications like the Certified Data Management Professional (CDMP). In addition to these core knowledge areas, the latest edition of the DMBoK also includes special sections beyond the 11 core areas. These include Data Management Processes, Data Ethics, and Big Data, which reflect the evolving practices and challenges in data management, such as ethical considerations around data use and the management of large, complex datasets.

The Data Management Framework or DAMA Wheel demonstrates how Data Governance underpins every Data Management activity, and it includes a section for big data within Data Management. It also includes a section for Data Management maturity assessment, providing a roadmap for organisations to assess and improve their data management capabilities.

The DMBoK is considered the gold standard of reference guides for data professionals, and it features updated contributions from over 120 data professionals. It includes the latest processes, best practices, and principles within Data Management, making it an invaluable resource for knowledge workers, project managers, executives, technical staff, data analysts, data architects, and anyone else involved with data.

First introduced in 2017, the second edition of the DAMA Guide to the Data Management Body of Knowledge (DMBoK) continues to set the standard for data management excellence. With its focus on 11 main topics within Data Management and its new sections on data processes, ethics, and big data, the DMBoK is an essential tool for anyone seeking to master data management in today's complex and data-driven world.
