Texas Picks Odyssey for School Voucher Program Launching in 2026

Texas has selected Odyssey, a technology company, to help establish the state's school voucher program. The company will work with the comptroller's office to design the application process, enabling families to receive funds for private or home-schooling costs in the United States. The program is expected to launch in the 2026-27 school year, with applications opening early next year.

Odyssey has been chosen due to its experience in managing similar programs in several states. It has previously overseen the distribution and administration of vouchers for private school enrollment in states like Georgia, Iowa, Louisiana, Utah, and Wyoming. The company will also develop a system for Texas families to shop for educational products and pay tuition.

The law authorizes the state to provide Odyssey up to 5% of the program's $1 billion funding, potentially reaching $50 million by 2030. Odyssey was awarded $500,000 in a contest founded by Janine and Jeff Yass, who donated $6 million to Gov. Greg Abbott's campaign. However, Odyssey has faced scrutiny in other states, including a lawsuit in Iowa and an audit in Idaho that identified ineligible purchases.

Acting Comptroller Kelly Hancock stated that the goal is to give parents the freedom to choose the best educational path for their children. Odyssey is responsible for raising awareness about the statewide initiative and managing complaints. The program aims to provide more educational choices for Texas families.
