Teachers in Kericho to face murder allegations due to fatal caning of a 14-year-old student.
News Article:
Two teachers from St. Teresa Mixed Day and Boarding Primary School have been formally charged with the murder of a 14-year-old pupil, Enock Kipkoech, who passed away in 2022 after allegedly being beaten by a teacher and found hanging in a school bathroom.
The inquest court in Kericho ruled that the teachers, Aaron Koskei and Phillemon Koskei, acted grossly in a manner that led to the pupil’s death, with serious injuries found on his buttocks. The teachers administered the punishment just hours before the pupil was found dead.
Dr. Siele, Enock's father, was called to the school by one of the teachers, claiming that his son was not feeling well. Upon arrival, he found the school authorities absent. The boy was in good health when he left home and had no visible injuries, according to Dr. Siele. However, postmortem photos and testimony revealed serious injuries to Enock's buttocks, consistent with a brutal beating.
Teacher Aron Koskei admitted to caning the boy for moving to another classroom during exams, which he was supervising at the time. Magistrate Bii found that the corporal punishment inflicted grievous harm. He highlighted that the evidence pointed to "foul play before the deceased died" and that the corporal punishment in this case clearly escalated into a criminal act.
Dr. Siele was not allowed to access the bathroom area where his son was allegedly found. He stated that the injuries seen in the photographs did not come from home. The court's findings now pave the way for criminal charges to be filed against the two teachers.
The Directors of Public Prosecutions are expected to act on the court's recommendation and charge the teachers with manslaughter or murder, depending on the direction of further investigations. The parents of Enock Kipkoech have been seeking justice amid claims of efforts to cover up the truth. They describe their child as a hardworking boy with a bright future, deeply affected emotionally and psychologically by his death, and hope justice will be served following the court’s recommendation.
