UCLA Composition Students Co-Orchestrate EDM Track "Crazy"

Kian Ravaei, a 22-year-old composer born in 1999, has made a name for himself in both the classical and electronic music spheres. His unique blend of orchestral elements with dance music has earned him recognition, particularly for his work on the strings-heavy orchestration of Wooli's single, 'Crazy.'

Ravaei, a student at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), teamed up with fellow composition student Robby Good to co-orchestrate this EDM track. Although specific details about Good's role in the project are scarce, Ravaei's contributions are well-documented.

Ravaei and Good assembled a 48-piece orchestra for the recording, comprising performers from across Los Angeles. More than two-dozen UCLA students and alumni were part of this orchestra, including Neil Cole, Luke Candias, Kristine Llanderal, Taylor Lee, Iona Pay, Duncan Smith, Jessica Lipman, Austin Ali, Charles Brunson, Ethan Holmes, Hannah Stefureak, Jonathan Schlitt, Cash Langi, Maggie Pan, Christina Perez, Alec Norkey, Arielle Claire Kasyanova, Xenia Deviatkina-Loh, Isabella Mija Reyes, Lorenna Garcia, Leo Santi, Chris Cho, Haley Hedegard, Emma Yim, and Masiel Medina.

The opportunity to orchestrate the track came through a UCLA alumnus mentor. The orchestration of the track was learned under the mentorship of professors Dwayne Milburn, Kay Rhie, and Richard Danielpour at UCLA. Ravaei and Good spent several weeks meticulously editing orchestral parts and corresponding with over 200 potential orchestral musicians.

Ravaei expressed excitement about the release, as it was the first official gig for many involved in over a year. Robby Good also shared that leading the orchestra and having Kian's support was a remarkable experience.

The track, featuring Casey Cook, was released on January 14 by Ophelia Records. With its strings-heavy EDM sound, it continues to garner attention and streaming success, further cementing Ravaei's reputation as a composer bridging orchestral music with electronic genres.
