Schwerin Education Protest: Students Rally for School Reforms Across Mecklenburg-Vorpommern

Students from across Mecklenburg-Vorpommern will rally in Schwerin today at 11:00 AM, emphasizing the urgent need for reforms in the education system. The state student council issued a call to action, stating that the current educational model no longer caters to the demands of the present era.

The protest initiators call attention to escalating anxiety and eating disorders amongst children and youth. Furthermore, recent German PISA results underscored the need for change in the education sector. In a catalog of demands, the student council proposes introducing a subject for resilience training and stress management, along with a reevaluation of grading in talent subjects such as sports, music, and art. The proposed changes also include allowing students to choose between taking the Abitur after 12 or 13 years of school, expanding democracy and media education, and abolishing written homework.

The Education and Science Union (GEW) praised the student representatives for exercising their democratic rights and stimulating debate about a modern education system. Some of their demands align with those of the union.

Location: Schwerin, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern
