Socialist Democrats find potential for success following Mamdani's win in Minneapolis
In the upcoming mayoral election in Minneapolis, Democratic Socialist and progressive candidate Omar Fateh is mounting a left-wing challenge to incumbent Mayor Jacob Frey. Endorsed by the Minneapolis Democrats (DFL) and the Sunrise Movement, Fateh presents himself as a progressive alternative to Frey's more moderate approach.
Fateh, a young Somali-American Muslim, is advocating for systemic change, focusing on issues such as affordability and public safety. His platform prioritises progressive policies and aligns with the city's left-wing majority, in contrast to Frey's clashes with the city council on key labour and housing issues.
Key differences between the two candidates are evident. Fateh's political stance is democratic socialist and progressive, while Frey is a moderate Democrat with a more establishment-oriented approach. Frey, who has been the incumbent mayor for two terms, has faced criticism for his policies on Israel, whereas Fateh is a known critic, calling for a ceasefire and warning against a genocidal war on Palestinians.
Frey has been involved in controversies, having alienated some city progressives with the use of his veto power. On the other hand, Fateh has proposed enacting rent stabilisation, disciplining local police who work with immigration officers, and increasing access to affordable housing.
The city Democrats' endorsement of a mayoral candidate for the first time in 16 years has given Fateh a boost, with resources from the state DFL party, including volunteers and access to the voter access network. However, some of Fateh's supporters are wary of deploying an "anyone but Frey" strategy in the fall's ranked-choice general election contest.
Jacob Frey came in second place at the nominating convention in his last two successful runs for mayor and has challenged the convention results. Despite this, some of Frey's supporters believe he will ultimately win a third term.
Frey led Minneapolis during the COVID-19 pandemic and the protests and unrest following George Floyd's murder. He has maintained that under his leadership, he's made important investments in affordable housing.
Local reports suggest the endorsing convention was chaotic, with the party's online delegate voting system malfunctioning and some of Frey's supporters leaving the arena. Chelsea McFarren, chair of Minneapolis for the Many, expressed a desire to see Frey ousted in favour of a more progressive leader.
Aru Shiney-Ajay, executive director of the Sunrise Movement, has exclaimed that Fateh's victory shows democratic socialism is on the upswing. However, Jacob Hill, Executive Director of All of Minneapolis, argues that Fateh is too extreme.
As the election approaches, the race between Fateh and Frey promises to be a closely contested battle, with the city's future hanging in the balance. Minneapolis will rank-choice vote in the general election, adding an extra layer of complexity to the race.
