SCN Hall of Fame 2025 Recognizes Gordon Moore for his Contributions
Spunky Redirection: Gordon Moore's Journey from Retail to Lectrosonics
Boredom in the retail industry, where he slugged it out for 13 long years, and a craving for something more challenging, led Gordon Moore to veer into the AV realm. This unexpected shift wasn't necessarily a calculated move but a fortunate twist of fate. With an itch for change, he embarked on a small computer business venture, but soon realized it'd become just another commodity found at big-box stores like Walmart.
SVP, Baby!
One Saturday morning, Moore flipped open a newspaper to find a job ad for a sales position at Lectrosonics, a company he'd never even heard of. Intrigued by the prospect of diving into audio tech, he applied and spent the subsequent 35 years of his career with this pioneering wireless microphone and audio processing powerhouse for mission-critical applications. He rose through the ranks to serve as president from 2015 until his retirement in 2024.
Starting From Scratch
In the early days, Lectrosonics was largely unknown in the industry. Moore vividly recalls his first sales calls vividly, with prospective clients asking, "Who the hell is Lectrosonics?" After breaking ground with a few major TV stations in Chicago, including WGN, Lectrosonics really took off. Sales skyrocketed from five or ten wireless channels a week to 250 a month, and the company experienced meteoric growth in the '80s and '90s.
The Lansbury Effect
A significant boost came from the endorsement of acting legend Angela Lansbury after she fell in love with Lectrosonics' wireless microphones on a commercial shoot. Smitten, she insisted that her prime-time series, Murder, She Wrote, switch to Lectrosonics, sparking further growth for the enterprise.
Sharing His Knowledge
If Moore is to be proud of one career moment above all, it's his tenure as an educator. In 1991, after attending InfoComm and being underwhelmed by the seminars he attended, he jumped at the chance to contribute to AVIXA's education offerings when presented with the opportunity by a co-worker. Moore later became the chairman of the Professional Education and Training Committee (PETC) and was awarded the prestigious Fred Dixon Lifetime Achievement Award for Education in 2019.
AV Pro in Retirement
Although he's officially retired, Moore remains board chairman for Lectrosonics and offers his expertise in AV and technology to his local church, ensuring he stays plugged into the industry. As he looks back on his career, Moore emphasizes the importance of continuous education, encouraging everyone to pursue their CTS certifications through AVIXA and to take the initiative in troubleshooting.
