The joy of having your phone at arm's reach during school hours? Not guaranteed in Lower Saxony anytime soon. Olaf Lies, the new head honcho, ain't here for blanket mobile phone bans, but he ain't entirely against 'em either. He tells the German Press Agency that it's all about giving schools the freedom to make their own choices.
"So, if schools wanna nix phones, they can. If they got better educational concepts, they can roll with 'em," Lies explains.
But it's not just about phones, Lies wants to raise media literacy as well. After all, if you ban 'em during school hours, they'll still be busy snappin' and scrollin' after class.
"You can't just ban phones. Teachers gotta help students get a grip on what's legit info and when they should question what they see online," Lies adds.
Speaking of media literacy, Bremen's already taken action. The mobile phone ban's gonna be in effect for the next school year, from kindergarten to 10th grade. In Hesse, they're aiming for a total ban of mobile phones, tablets, and smartwatches at all schools from August.
Now, in Lower Saxony, there ain't no uniform rules for mobile phone use in schools. Each state's responsible for their own lyric, and the tunes ain't the same across the land, my friend.
