Royal Mint Marks 150 Years of Public Libraries with Special 50p Coin

The Royal Mint has released a special 50p coin to mark the 150th anniversary of the Public Libraries Act of 1850. The coin, designed by Bruce Rushin, features a reverse image of a stylised book set atop a classical library building, symbolising the power of public libraries to provide access to knowledge and education for all.

The Public Libraries Act of 1850 was a significant milestone in UK history, granting local boroughs the authority to establish free public libraries. Before this, access to books and education was largely restricted to those with wealth or private means. The Act marked a crucial step towards universal access to information and literature.

The 2000 50p coin, issued as part of the annual coin set, commemorates this important anniversary. Over 11.2 million of these commemorative coins were released into circulation. In 2009, the design was re-issued as part of a 16 coin set celebrating the 40th anniversary of the 50p, with various precious metal options and limited issue numbers.

The 2000 Public Libraries 50p coin serves as a reminder of the enduring importance of public libraries in promoting literacy and learning. With over 11.2 million coins in circulation, it is a testament to the widespread impact of the Public Libraries Act of 1850.
