Revised 2025 WASSCE Results by WAEC: Increase in Candidate's Pass Rate in Core Subjects to 62.96%

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced a revision of the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results for school candidates in Nigeria. This decision was made following the discovery of a grading error in Mathematics, English Language, Biology, and Economics.

Dr. Amos Dangut, Head of the Nigeria National Office of WAEC, made these announcements at a press briefing. He expressed regret over the distress caused by the grading error and apologised to candidates and parents for any inconvenience.

Initially, only 38.32% of candidates had obtained credits in at least five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics. However, following the revision, the pass rate has significantly increased. According to the council, 1,239,884 candidates obtained credits in at least five subjects, representing 62.96% of the total candidates. The total number of candidates who obtained credits in at least five subjects regardless of the subject combination is 1,718,090, representing 87.24% of the total candidates.

A total of 1,969,313 candidates sat for the exam, with 976,787 males and 992,526 females. Unfortunately, 192,089 results, or 9.75% of the total, were withheld over exam malpractice. WAEC urged state governments owing the Council to settle their debts so that affected students' results can be released. The results of 191,053 candidates remain withheld over various cases of examination malpractice, which are under investigation. Candidates who had their results withheld over exam malpractice will be notified through their schools once investigations are concluded.

Schools that took the 2025 WASSCE using the computer-based test mode were not affected by the revision of results due to the error with the serialised English Language Objective Tests; only schools that took the paper-based exams were impacted by this revision.

The correction of a grading error is the reason behind the increase in the number of students who obtained credits in at least five core subjects. The error was caused by the use of a wrong serialised code file during the printing process. The correction followed an internal post-examination review.

Candidates have been advised to recheck their results on the WAEC portal, www.waecdirect.org. Digital certificates will be available for application 48 hours after result confirmation.

WAEC also reminded candidates and schools to adhere to examination rules and regulations to avoid exam malpractice, which could lead to the withholding of results. The Council urges all involved to maintain integrity and honesty in the examination process to ensure fairness for all candidates.
