"My dad was like, 'Listen, if you don't want to get married, you can't live here.' He thought he'd scare me into submission, and I thought he'd come around. I thought, he's grief-stricken because his wife, my mom, has just passed away, and this will all be okay," the comedian confessed.
Refusing to return home, Garg initially planned to crash with friends till her father cooled down. However, what began as an extended sleepover transformed into two years of couch-surfing as she searched for a permanent place to call her own.

"In hindsight, a lot of my comedy has its roots in those years because a big reason people opened their doors to me was because I made them laugh. I always kept things light. I tried to offer whatever value I could around the dinner table or whatever was going on," she told Kilmeade.
After a prolonged standstill, Garg confessed to easing her way back to her father in hopes of obtaining an immigration visa to live with her sister in America. Sadly, her father maintained his distance, growing further estranged, and even prohibiting her from attending his funeral.
Rebirth in the Land of Opportunities
Eventually, Garg was granted a US visa in 1992, seized the chance, and went on to earn an undergraduate degree from the University of Akron, later attending the Case Western University School of Law.
Garg, despite her fractured relationship with her father, insisted that he acted from a "good place," albeit coming from a traditional Indian background.
