Philadelphia educators receive classroom privileges granted
The Pioneering AI in School Systems (PASS) program, a collaborative effort between the University of Pennsylvania's Graduate School of Education (Penn GSE) and the School District of Philadelphia, is delving into the far-reaching implications of artificial intelligence (AI) in the educational sphere.
Led by co-leaders Betty Chandy, the director for Online Learning at the Graduate School of Education's Catalyst Center, and L. Michael Golden, the Vice Dean of Innovative Programs & Partnerships at Penn GSE, the PASS program is designed to help educators, school leaders, and district leadership understand AI and navigate its promises and perils in modern learning.
The program, which commenced in April and will run through September, is structured in a tiered manner, allowing each cohort to focus on specific aspects of emerging AI. The tiered structure ensures that everyone from district leadership to educators can engage with the program at a level that suits their needs.
In an educator session held in August, questions about AI's impact on student writing, tech literacy, and social interaction were discussed. The session aimed to provide educators with insights into how AI can enhance learning experiences while mitigating potential risks.
Artificial intelligence, according to L. Michael Golden, is everywhere. The PASS program seeks to demystify AI and its implications, empowering educators, school leaders, and district leadership to make informed decisions about its integration into school systems.
The PASS program is generously supported by the Marrazzo Family Foundation. As the program continues, additional programming for teachers is being developed to ensure they have the necessary tools to harness the benefits of AI while managing its potential risks.
The School District of Philadelphia has also taken steps to allow students secure access to AI technologies on district devices. This move reflects the district's commitment to embracing technological advancements in education.
In a world where AI is increasingly prevalent, the PASS program stands as a beacon of guidance and understanding. By exploring the influence of AI on modern learning and providing practical applications, the program is paving the way for a future where AI enhances, rather than replaces, the educational experience.
