OpenAI Develops Age Recognition System for ChatGPT Safety
OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, is developing an automated age recognition system to enforce age-appropriate content and safety measures for under-18 users. This move follows the tragic suicide of 16-year-old Adam Raine, whose parents blame OpenAI for their son's isolation and death. The system, which estimates users' ages based on usage patterns, is expected to be ready by the end of the month.
OpenAI aims to protect young people from harmful content by developing this age recognition system. If the system cannot determine the age, it defaults to treating the user as a teenager. The company plans to block sexual content and discussions about suicide or self-harm for users under 18. In cases of acute psychological distress, OpenAI will first contact parents and, if necessary, involve authorities.
Parents will have more control over their children's ChatGPT use with features like account linking, disabling chat history, setting 'blackout' times, and crisis notifications. In certain cases or countries, age verification using an ID may be required. These parental control features are partly in response to the Adam Raine case and are expected to be available soon.
OpenAI's age recognition system for ChatGPT is a significant step towards ensuring the safety and well-being of young users. By enforcing age-appropriate content and providing parental control features, OpenAI hopes to prevent tragedies like Adam Raine's and create a safer environment for all users.
