Nighttime business activities significantly highlighted in a recent NightLÄND research project

The 'NightLÄND' study, commissioned by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Labor, and Tourism of Baden-Württemberg, sheds light on the vital role of the nighttime economy in the region. The study provides valuable insights into current trends, opportunities for improvement, and funding possibilities.

According to the findings, the nighttime economy generates approximately 9 billion euros in annual turnover and supports over 220,000 jobs. Establishments such as bars, restaurants, clubs, theaters, cinemas, festivals, open-air events, live concerts, and late-night dining venues are crucial for the economy, society, and tourism to thrive.

Dr. Patrick Rapp, State Secretary in the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Labor, and Tourism, emphasized the importance of the nighttime economy in attracting highly qualified professionals. He highlighted that it provides meeting places that benefit both businesses and the overall population's well-being.

The study offers numerous impulses and concrete examples for the development and implementation of a good nighttime economy. It analyzes the peculiarities of the nighttime economy, the origin of guests, the appearance of a 'typical' night on-site, the role of 'Night Governance', and the challenges faced.

One of the key recommendations is recognizing the nighttime economy as an important economic factor. The study proposes twelve recommendations for strengthening the nighttime economy with targeted actions and measures. Reducing bureaucratic hurdles is suggested as a means to improve the nighttime economy.

The nighttime economy fosters cultural diversity, social cohesion, and tourism. Networking with neighboring industries such as hotels, daytime gastronomy, or tourism can help the nighttime economy. Nighttime businesses can improve their resilience by adapting their business models and offerings to changing needs and reaching new target groups.

The study was conducted by Prognos on behalf of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Labor and Tourism of Baden-Württemberg. For the first time, it provides nationwide data on 'life after eight'. The study company 'NightLÄND' was conducted on behalf of the Ministry of Economics Baden-Württemberg by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IHK).

In conclusion, the nighttime economy is an indispensable element for vibrant city centers and significantly contributes to the quality of life in Baden-Württemberg. It offers space for encounters and contributes to creating a lively and interesting atmosphere in cities. The study highlights the significance of activities after eight in making a location more attractive for businesses, more livable for people, and more interesting as a tourism destination. Based on the study's findings, suitable strategies and appropriate measures can now be taken locally to further strengthen the nighttime economy.
