Get ready, Lower Saxony! The competition for top-tier universities in the ongoing Excellence Initiative isn't over yet, with up to four elite institutions in the running. Before the Excellence Clusters' decision on May 22, the TU Braunschweig, Leibniz University Hannover, the Medical School Hannover (MHH), and the University of Oldenburg are all battling it out. As Falko Mohrs, the Science Minister, explained, two Excellence Clusters would be a prerequisite for applying as an Excellence University in the next round. Exciting times are ahead, as there's currently no elite university in the state.

In the previous round of clusters, Lower Saxony pitched nine research projects. Among them were six existing and three potential new Excellence Clusters, with the forthcoming week's evaluation deciding on their funding for the next seven years. Mohrs revealed that up to 70 clusters would be funded nationwide instead of the previous 57, agreed upon by the federal and state governments.

The "Zukunft.Niedersachsen" program has already invested more than one billion euros in science since February 2023. Mainly financed by the state's Volkswagen shares' dividends flowing to the Volkswagen Foundation, grants have been given for cutting-edge research in everything from heart patches grown from stem cells to efficient solar cells and AI-controlled robots for optimized farming.

"We're playing in the big leagues of science, and our goal is to become even more visible internationally," said Georg Schütte, chairman of the Volkswagen Foundation. Shortly after taking office at the end of 2022, Mohrs announced, "We aim to have at least one Excellence University in Lower Saxony."
