Tackling Online Learning Hiccups: MOE's Summer School Blitz
In the online-learning-dominated era of Kazakhstan's education, the Ministry of Education (MOE) has identified a host of knowledge gaps and challenges faced by the students. As reported by Total.kz, Maira Meldiyeva, the Chairperson of the Committee for Primary and Secondary Education of the Ministry of Education and Science, spilled the beans at a press briefing.
Over 3.4 million students participated in this year's education shuffle, with a mixed online-offline learning format. Despite the final grades not being tabulated yet, Meldiyeva admits that the online learning experience cannot beat the traditional learning experience, potentially affecting the overall quality.
While some students were digital savvies, cruising through the online learning process, others stumbled. However, Meldiyeva insists it's high time to address the knowledge gaps.
So, what's the plan? Summer schools kick off on May 26 and will operate till June 19. These schools are not just short-term cookie-cutter solutions but a long-term strategy to cater to the wishes of the parents and students.
The summer learning format will offer both group classroom sessions and one-on-one lessons. The MOE, in collaboration with the Almaty Region Academy of Education, has scrutinized the educational programs from 1st to 11th grades to isolate the tough nuts to crack during online learning.
With a list of difficulty areas in hand, teachers get 90 days to bridge the knowledge gaps, minus their 56 days of vacation. Pay is on the table, just like pre-pandemic days.
To make the most of the digital age, summer schools need to focus on enhancing digital literacy, reinforcing foundational skills, and fostering inclusive education practices. Let's take a quick dive into these three crucial areas:
Digital Literacy and Skills: Rapidly transitioning to digital learning environments can leave students puzzled. They often grapple with self-regulated learning skills, computational thinking, and scientific inquiry practices.
Foundational Skills: With an overemphasis on technology, foundational skills like critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication might get overlooked.
Inclusive Practices: While Kazakhstan strides forward in inclusive education, making sure everyone has equal access to digital resources and learning environments remains a hurdle.
So, let's get back to summer schools. By concentrating on digital literacy courses, foundational skills development, inclusive education initiatives, hands-on AI and technology training, and collaborative learning projects, summer schools can help students navigate the tumultuous digital and technology-laden educational landscape.
