Metaphor Seminar Series Launches in Oxford

A seminar series is underway to explore the role of conceptual metaphors in reception studies. The first event, 'Shards; Collage; Contagion', takes place on 25 November 2025 at the Ioannou Centre in Oxford. Convened by Leo Kershaw and Pantelis Michelakis, the seminar aims to delve into the history, etymology, and changing uses of metaphors to understand semantic struggles.

The seminar series seeks to understand how metaphors shape critical judgement and their affordances and functions. It will explore the relationships between metaphors and their links and commitments in reception studies. The event on 25 November will also examine the concerns about Greco-Roman classics that metaphors foreground. Additionally, it will reflect on the prioritization of metaphors in critical discourses of reception studies and consider their limitations and unfulfilled potential.

No further participating scientists are named in the current sources for the seminar on 25 November, besides the conveners Leo Kershaw and Pantelis Michelakis.

The seminar series, convened by Leo Kershaw and Pantelis Michelakis, offers a comprehensive exploration of conceptual metaphors in reception studies. The first seminar, 'Shards; Collage; Contagion', promises to provide valuable insights into the history, uses, and implications of metaphors in this field.
