"Mark Scheibe, a student and composer from Bremen, reconstructs the German national anthem, emphasizing unity over division"
A new version of the German national anthem, Deutschlandlied, has been created by students from two schools in Bremen, and will be premiered at the 27th edition of the "Melodie des Lebens" event of the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen on November 21st and 22nd.
The finished composition was recorded and produced at Studio Nord in Bremen, with the collaboration of composer Mark Scheibe, who is originally from Bremen and now based in Berlin. Scheibe adapted the text of the anthem to reflect what unites us more than divides us.
In the new version, the anthem now says: "Equal rights for every human, from birth until the end." and "Let's all strive for this, everyone has talent for happiness." These changes aim to reflect the realities, dreams, and hopes of children and youth.
The revised anthem features a guest appearance by Albrecht Mayer, solo oboist of the Berliner Philharmoniker, in the accompanying video. Mayer's embracing attitude aligns with the ideals of the new anthem.
The revision was initiated before the call by former Federal President Christian Wulff for the national anthem to be sung in German schools. The students involved hail from Bremen-Ost Comprehensive School and Park High School.
The video for the revised anthem was shot with Mark Scheibe and Bremen students, and the photograph above is a snapshot from the video shoot. As of July 26, 2025, no specific publicly available search results detail this version of the German national anthem performed by Bremen's youth or a collaboration with the Berliner Philharmoniker.
