In a significant turn of events, the long-running case against Matthew Schlegel, a former Severna Park Elementary School teacher, has reached its conclusion. All remaining charges against Schlegel have been dismissed by the state, effectively clearing him of all accusations related to the case.
Schlegel was initially accused of sexually abusing multiple third-grade students between 2022 and 2024. After a month-long trial, he was found not guilty on 18 counts of child sex abuse. However, the jury had been deadlocked on three misdemeanor second-degree assault charges. The state, citing insufficient evidence to continue prosecution, decided not to pursue these remaining charges, and an Anne Arundel County judge subsequently dismissed them.
Schlegel's release comes with restrictions, including no contact with the alleged victims or unsupervised interaction with minors. The State’s Attorney acknowledged the disappointment of the victims’ families but emphasized that the prosecution must adhere to the ethical standard of proving guilt beyond a reasonable doubt and that they believed they presented the strongest evidence available.
Reactions to the decision remain divided, with some supporters of the accusers stating the justice system failed, while others argue the charges were never substantiated.
Meanwhile, in other news, Captain's Daughter, a new restaurant offering a coastal menu, has opened at The Westin in Annapolis. The restaurant's menu includes Delmarva-inspired dishes like blue crab carbonara, she-crab soup, and a salmon and crab Benedict. The 3,200-square-foot space features a circular bar, a cozy lounge with a fireplace, and a dining room that aims to honor the Chesapeake's rich flavors.
Additionally, two new automated speed cameras will go live today in school zones near Chesapeake High School and Glen Burnie High School. The cameras are part of Anne Arundel County's Automated Traffic Enforcement Speed Program and will be active from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday. After a 15-day warning period, citations will be issued to violators.
Lastly, the Chesapeake Baysox are hosting a homestand from July 4 to 6, featuring events like "Red, White and BOOM" Independence Day game, fireworks, and Mullet Mania Giveaway.
