In the heart of January 2024, the Concours de Lecture, a celebration of Franco-German bilingualism, took place in the picturesque partner city of Châlons-en-Champagne. This annual event, held in collaboration with Neuss, Germany, is a significant cultural event designed to foster language learning and intercultural exchange.

The competition, under the patronage of Neuss Mayor Reiner Breuer, saw the participation of students from various learning levels, ranging from the 2nd learning year to upper secondary school. A total of 17 candidates from the 2nd learning year showcased their skills, demonstrating the growing interest in language proficiency among the young participants.

The event kicked off with a heartfelt thank you from the organizers, including Magda Holzberg from the German-French Cultural Circle Neuss, Annette Lohkamp, Lilli Käfer, and Helga Schwarze from the city library. In a short speech, Liliane Loegel and Geneviève Quinaud addressed all participants, expressing their appreciation for the courage and dedication displayed by each candidate.

The jury, consisting of German-French representatives, was responsible for selecting the best performances. The jury's decision was not an easy one, as the competition was fierce, with participants hailing from beyond the city limits of Neuss.

The highlight of the event was the captivating reading of an unknown text by an upper secondary school student, which left the audience in awe. Neuss Mayor Reiner Breuer, in a section read in French, emphasized the importance of language for relations with the French neighbour. His words were met with enthusiastic applause.

Each participant received a certificate and a small gift, made possible by generous donations from Neuss sponsors such as Hitch Cinema, the Book House at the Minster, and the city of Neuss. The event concluded with a personal honouring of the participants, teachers, jury, and organizers by Neuss Mayor Reiner Breuer, who reiterated his support for such cultural initiatives.

Looking ahead, the organizers expressed their hope that many students will again participate in the competition next year, further strengthening the Franco-German partnership and promoting bilingualism. For those interested in participating, it is recommended to consult the official municipal websites of Neuss and Châlons-en-Champagne or specific Franco-German cultural exchange platforms for precise and current details.

To encourage participation from even more students, the organizers expressed their hope that many would continue their exploration of the French language next year, strengthening the Franco-German partnership and promoting education-and-self-development. For those seeking further opportunities for Franco-German bilingualism, it is advisable to consult relevant education-and-self-development platforms, such as the official municipal websites of Neuss and Châlons-en-Champagne, or other appropriate resources.
