Judi Segall, a renowned conflict resolution specialist, has joined the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Ombuds Office, effective from September 2. Segall will work alongside Toni Robinson, the current Ombudsperson, to help the MIT community members resolve disputes, convey concerns, and express their points of view.

Segall's extensive experience in conflict resolution, leadership, and ombuds work will be beneficial in her new role. She comes to MIT after serving for 17 years as the university ombudsman and director of the Stony Brook Ombuds Office. During her tenure at Stony Brook University, Segall directed the management and oversight of all Ombuds Office operations, conducted informal consultations with administrators and managers to raise awareness of systemic problems, and led conflict management training courses and outreach programs for faculty, students, and staff.

Segall's appointment at MIT follows the retirement of Mary Rowe, who served for 41 years at the Institute. Segall is replacing Rowe, who is known for her significant contributions to the field of ombuds work and conflict management.

Segall's qualifications in conflict management are noteworthy. She holds a BA in history from the State University of New York at Oswego and a master's in social work from Stony Brook University. In addition, Segall has been certified as an organizational ombudsman practitioner by the Center for Mediation in Law since 2011 and received her certification from the Center for Mediation in Law in 2005.

The MIT Ombuds Office, established in 1980, serves as a voice for the students, faculty, and staff of MIT and is one of over 500 academic, corporate, and government ombuds programs across the country. These programs are charged with advancing constructive conflict management and supporting positive systems change.

In her new role, Segall will work with her fellow ombuds to identify problems, promote ethical conduct, and facilitate positive growth within the Institute. The MIT Ombuds Office, under Segall's leadership, will continue to work with her fellow ombuds to help the MIT community members resolve disputes, convey concerns, and express their points of view.
