Interview: discarding garments that failed to meet the selection criteria?

Eliminating discarded garments from your closet after establishing a capsule wardrobe in 2013 resulted in a stack of around 100 unwanted items for me. Oh dear!

In a bid to simplify their life, the speaker cleaned out their closet in 2013, leaving over 100 pieces of clothing to get rid of. These clothes, most of which were in good condition with some still having tags on, no longer fit the speaker's body or life as they had never been worn.

Instead of feeling guilty about the excess, the speaker decided to learn from the experience, move on, and use their excess to meet a need and bless someone around them. This shift in perspective led the speaker to take action, selling their excess clothes on eBay and donating the money to charitable causes. Two such causes that the speaker recommends are The Fred Rogers Foundation and H.O.P.E. Alternatively, the speaker suggests selling on Instagram or at resale shops like Plato's Closet or Buffalo Exchange.

The inspiration for this change came from the book "More or Less" by Jeff Shinabarger. Initially, the speaker expected Shinabarger's tone to be harsh and judgmental, but found it to be hopeful, purposeful, and relatable. The message from "More or Less" is to use one's excess to meet needs around them. This mantra resonated with the speaker, who now considers the book one of their top 3 and has adopted the phrase "Use your excess."

The speaker's journey towards a more generous lifestyle brought joy and freedom, and they encourage others to follow suit. Next week, the speaker will focus on shopping smart to avoid accumulating excess clothing during a Q&A session.

In addition, the speaker has been actively involved with Clothes4Souls, a charity that gives clothes to people in need and creates jobs in poor and disadvantaged communities. The speaker recently hosted a Clothing Drive with Clothes4Souls, and continues to support the organisation's mission to make a positive impact.

Jeff Shinabarger, author of "More or Less", writes that personal wealth is an opportunity for a lifestyle of greater generosity. The speaker wholeheartedly agrees, and invites everyone to join them in embracing a generous lifestyle.
