Prisoners in Saxony-Anhalt Earning School Leaves, Vocational Qualifications, and Taking Distance Learning Courses

In Saxony-Anhalt, inmates are utilizing their time incarcerated to pursue various educational opportunities, such as earning a school leaving certificate or completing vocational training. Last year, 28 inmates finished their main or intermediate school leaving certificate, and 22 completed an initial vocational training or retraining, as per data from the Ministry of Justice in Magdeburg.
In the Raßnitz juvenile detention center alone, 13 inmates managed to pass their main school leaving certificate, with 9 more earning their intermediate school leaving certificate. The prison in Burg near Magdeburg saw 5 inmates successfully complete the main school leaving certificate exam, while 1 attained the intermediate certificate, according to ministry records. Exams for school leaving certificates are still ongoing this year, and no registrations for vocational qualifications have been received at Burg Prison as of yet.
At Raßnitz's juvenile detention center, 2 inmates completed an initial vocational training as carpenters, 5 as skilled construction workers, and 4 in metal technology. One trainee in the metal technology field was even recognized as the best trainee by the IHK.
Distance learning plays a crucial role in some prisons, such as in Burg and Halle, where retraining forms the main focus. In total, 11 inmates are currently undertaking retraining programs as warehouse logistics specialists, wood mechanics, or skilled construction workers. In the broader population of around 1,460 inmates in the state, there is one student engaged in distance learning, but details about their field of study were not disclosed upon request.
Minister Weidinger: Education and Resocialization
Saxony-Anhalt's Minister of Justice, Franziska Weidinger (CDU), highlighted the importance of education within the penal system. "Education in the penal system is far more than just acquiring knowledge - it is a crucial component of resocialization and an opportunity for personal reorientation," she said. These educational pursuits provide both skills and knowledge, as well as hope and self-confidence for the inmates. "Education opens up paths that make a crime-free life possible: a positive effect for each individual and also for society," the minister stated.
