Illinois Coroner Reports Four Fatalities at After-School Program Site Following Vehicle Collision
Tragically, four young ladies, aged between 4 to 18, met their end on Monday afternoon in Chatham, Illinois, following a vehicle collision with a school program. According to the local coroner, Jim Allmon, all four victims were confirmed dead at the scene. Three of them were found outside the structure, while one was unfortunate enough to be inside, as stated by state police.
State authorities have declared that the investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing, yet it appears this event was not a targeted attack. Examinations on the victims' bodies were planned for Tuesday as part of the investigation, with identification to follow once the families have been informed.
The accident resulted in further injuries, with officials reporting that one individual was flown to a hospital. A vehicle crashed into the eastern side of the YNOT After School Camp's building, striking several people inside and exiting through the west wall.
The driver of the vehicle, the only occupant, wound up hospitalized but suffered no injuries. Toxicology tests have been conducted on the driver and the results are currently pending. The crash remains under investigation by both state police and Chatham Police Department.
Chatham officials have declared the situation a "grim tragedy" and urged people to pray for the entire community. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker expressed his sadness and is offering support to those affected. In-person learning was canceled for Tuesday at Ball-Chatham School District campuses, with an e-learning day being declared instead to focus on the emotional well-being of the community.
The camp, located near a city water tower and park, is thought to be leased or owned by the YNOT Outdoors Summer and After School Camp, which was established in 2002 by a Springfield couple to keep children active and stimulate their minds during summer months. The camp did not respond to requests for comment at the time of writing.
