United States Bans Harvard University from Enrolling International Students, Leaving Thousands in Limbo

by Jenny von Zepelin

The US Department of Homeland Security has barred Harvard University, a leading private Ivy League institution, from admitting international students effective immediately. Current international students, totaling over 6,000, are required to transfer to other universities or risk losing their legal status in the United States, the department announced on Thursday.

Harvard officials have called the government's decision unlawful and vowed to challenge it. However, the extent of the university's ability to contest the move and the implications for the affected students remain unclear.

A German student currently enrolled at Harvard for several semesters, who requested anonymity for personal reasons, shared his concerns about the situation. As part of the crop of highly educated German youth utilizing a stint at Harvard to enhance their resumes and secure positions in business, politics, and society, the student expressed apprehension and uncertainty about his future.

"I woke up this morning to numerous messages and inquiries," he said from Cambridge, Massachusetts, on Friday afternoon, German time. "The situation is tense, and everyone is searching for answers about what lies ahead."

The student, who aims to attend the upcoming graduation ceremony, fears the event may be canceled due to the uncertainty surrounding the situation. Moreover, he is worried for friends who have recently secured admissions for the upcoming semester and are now left in limbo.

The student's visa is valid for five years, but it is contingent upon his Harvard admission, which has been revoked by the Department of Homeland Security. Without a universally accepted remedy, such as enrolling in another accredited institution, international students risk losing their legal status in the US. The university has three days to respond to the government's order, but it is unclear what that means for their status in the interim and beyond, according to the student.

Reports circulated of a California judge halting the arrest of students whose visas were revoked. Although these visas differ from the university admissions in question, concerns have arisen about potential arrests for international students. There is widespread confusion, with no clear guidance emerging.

Meanwhile, an official recommendation has been issued for international students to secure admission into alternative universities to maintain their visa validity. However, many students, including the interviewee, find themselves unable to transfer or afford the costs associated with doing so.

The international students' trust in the US legal system has also been shaken, as they question the degree of influence that Congress and the Senate will have on the judges in this case. The government's conflict with educational institutions could paint a troubling picture for the country's educational and political landscape.

Most students are attempting to keep their emotions in check, waiting for a resolution rather than taking precipitous action. While many harbor hope that the Trump administration is merely aiming to intimidate the education sector, some students have already made the decision to return to their home countries.

"I have decided to return to Germany," the German student said. "I have reasons not to want to stay in this country, and yesterday's events confirming that international students are not welcome only serve to reinforce my decision."
