In the heart of Los Angeles, a visionary project is taking shape. The Centre for Innovative Learning, a school that aims to provide an equitable and innovative education for all students, is being planned within the walls of a repurposed shopping mall.
The school's Director of Technology, Christopher Lockhart, emphasizes the importance of preparing students for success in life, not just academically, but in all aspects.
One of the most exciting aspects of The Centre for Innovative Learning is its unique approach to resources. The school will make full use of items left behind by former storefront occupants. For example, advanced tech from a local Apple store, an esports arena from a local arcade, and a cosmetology school classroom from a beauty salon will all find new life within the school's walls.
The school's library, reimagined from a Barnes & Noble bookstore, will boast a K through 12 collection accessible to all students. Four full-time certified school librarians, one for each school level, and a full-time makerspace librarian will ensure that students have the resources they need to flourish.
The Centre for Innovative Learning will also employ certified teachers and engage in partnerships with community experts, including politicians and business and industry leaders. Programs will be developed for parental involvement and for older students and alumni to help younger students.
The school's logo, a phoenix rising from the ashes, symbolizes the igniting of the flame in all learners. The focus is on student achievement rather than architectural flare.
Schedules at the school will be co-created with students and staff to meet individual student needs. The high school, elementary school, and middle school will use reclaimed storefronts as classroom spaces.
The Centre for Innovative Learning was recognized as a winner at Tech & Learning's Innovative Leader Awards in 2022. The school has already sparked curiosity despite not being a real school yet.

In addition to its Los Angeles location, The Centre for Innovative Learning plans to establish a school of the future in other cities, including Princeton, Ohio, where a former movie theater will be converted into a performance arts space for student shows.
