First-year teacher embarks on national journey to honor pledge: Witness their graduation
At Boston Children's Hospital, Dr. Michael Taglienti applies his medical expertise, yet for his students at Sheridan Elementary School in Colorado, he remains simply "Mr. Tag."
Years after leaving his teaching post, Taglienti traveled across the nation to witness his former students walk the graduation stage at Sheridan High School.
"I had quite a few teachers who believed in me. He probably believed in me the most though, which is pretty cool," said Jazlene Barrows, a student of his from years past.
For Taglienti, his first class of students had always lingered in his memory. When he pursued medicine and eventually became a doctor in Boston, these recollections accompanied him.
Eight years later, he fulfilled a pledge he had made to those young learners by returning to Colorado. As he did so, he reflected, "From the very beginning, I always knew that I was going to leave. I knew I was studying for medicine. I was going to leave to go to med school to be a doctor."
The students, too, had not forgotten their former instructor or the wisdom he imparted. "I definitely kept it all," Taglienti said, mentioning memorable projects like videos they had created together.
These connections have proven meaningful for Taglienti, who said, "You're just trying to see how could you hopefully impact them in a way that goes beyond that one grade."
His aspiration of witnessing his students achieve their goals is now a reality, with Taglienti excitedly facing the finish line alongside his former fourth-graders. "Any dream is possible, but it takes hard work," Barrows commented, acknowledging the dedication demonstrated by their mentor.
As Taglienti reflects on this symbolic moment—reuniting with his students on a familiar field and seeing them cross the graduation stage—he notes the profound impact that teachers can have on shaping young lives, inspiring loyalty, and illustrating the value of resilience.
