Faculty Members at the Eastman Institute Receive Recognition and Advancement in Ranks

At the Eastman Institute for Oral Health (EIOH), several distinguished individuals have been recognised for their contributions to the field of dentistry. Here's a roundup of recent appointments, awards, and initiatives that are set to shape the future of oral health research and education.

Dr. Abdul Basir Barmak, M.D., Ed.D., has been named as the assistant director of the Master's Program at EIOH. In his new role, Dr. Barmak will collaborate with department chairs in developing their master's students' research ideas. He also teaches several courses, including Biostatistics and Clinical Research Design.

Dr. David Fraser, D.D.S., M.S., has been recognised for his outstanding accomplishments as an assistant professor in the Periodontics Department at EIOH. Dr. Fraser was awarded a Trainee Pilot Study funded by the National Institutes of Health and one of the University's most competitive dissertation fellowships. He is working on a project, Controlled delivery of periodontal ligament cells for in vivo tissue regeneration, which aims to develop a special hydrogel scaffold to transport periodontal ligament stem cells and release them near damage sites to stimulate new bone growth.

Dr. Szilvia Arany, D.M.D., Ph.D., has been named director of Geriatric Oral Health. Dr. Arany is working on a new dental initiative in GME residents' training by addressing older adult dental health care needs. She will also organize and direct a program that equips future generations of dentists with skills for treating older adults. Additionally, Dr. Arany will chair a new task force to evaluate periodontal education for the 2021-2022 academic year.

Dr. Alexandra Tsigarida, D.D.S., M.S., associate professor and program director for EIOH's Periodontics Residency Program, has been named the next chair of the Education Committee of the American Academy of Periodontology. She will also chair a new task force to evaluate periodontal education for the 2021-2022 academic year. Her term begins in early November after the General Assembly Business Session at the AAP Annual Meeting in Miami.

John Vorrasi, D.D.S., program director for the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency program, has been promoted to associate professor. Dr. Vorrasi has a strong clinical and research interest in orthognathic and TMJ surgery, facial reconstruction, and dental implants.

In the admissions committee, Dr. Barmak will participate in the decision-making process. The research team at EIOH working on the development of a special hydrogel scaffold to transport periodontal ligament stem cells and release them near damage sites to stimulate new bone growth has not been explicitly identified in the provided search results. However, therapeutic approaches that use stem cells to rebuild periodontal tissues have shown promise, but have run into issues with delivering the cells to the area of damage. The development of such a hydrogel could address these challenges and pave the way for new treatments for periodontitis, a condition that can cause irreversible damage to the jaw bone and tooth loss, and costly reconstructive therapies are the only options for treating this bone loss.
