Recently, I stumbled upon Inventario de pérdidas, a nearly forgotten book by Judith Schalansky, on my bookshelf. This fascinating work explores the loss of things both tangible and intangible - islands, works of art, languages, species. Yet, it's not just about what's gone - it talks about memory, preservation, and reinvention. These ideas seem more critical than ever, as we struggle to maintain our delicate balance with the world around us.
The world we live in is in flux - not just in terms of political and cultural dynamics, but also in the way we perceive and engage with our surroundings. Sustainability has become a question mark, as goals slip further into the future and regulations weaken. Meanwhile, the energy of our planet drains away, piece by piece, with each passing day. Ignoring sustainability today is akin to committing a willful act of forgetting.
The road to change can be hard to see - slow, quiet processes that slip into the shadows. We rely on immediate experiences to define our reality, and what we can't touch or feel often seems unreal. But it's what we can't sense that can be the most dangerous. Philosopher Timothy Morton refers to these phenomena as "hyperobjects" - so vast in time and space that they are impossible for us to comprehend fully. The climate crisis, for instance, advances silently, just like forgetting itself.
