The Bronx Science Gender and Sexuality Alliance (GSA), located in room 315, is a vibrant and inclusive community that has become a staple in the school's landscape, established in 2021. This student-led organisation, much like its predecessors that emerged in the 1970s, is a testament to the enduring need for safe spaces and support systems within educational institutions.
The GSA serves as a sanctuary where students can freely express themselves, find solace, and connect with others who share similar experiences and identities. Meetings are a lively mix of colourful slideshows, small side conversations, plates full of chips, occasional card games, and discussions about personal experiences and love lives.
At the helm of the Bronx Science GSA are its dedicated leaders. President Hikmah Ahmed '25, Vice President Alice Xing '25, Secretary Linsay Kim '25, and Social Media Manager Marina Del Solar '25, work tirelessly to ensure the club remains a welcoming and supportive environment for all.
Marina Del Solar, the Social Media Manager, found a sense of belonging in the GSA, stating that it provides a queer community where she doesn't feel the need to perform. The bond between members is unique, as they find common ground through their unique identities.
The GSA is not just a diversity club, but a movement embodying Bronx Science's spirit of acceptance, empowerment, and community. It partners with local LGBTQ+ organizations for activism, education, and community outreach, and organises events and workshops to promote understanding and acceptance, contributing to a more inclusive and respectful school environment.
Coming Out Day, an annual event organised by the GSA, is a significant highlight. This day is commemorated on October 11th, marking the Second National March for Gay and Lesbian Rights in Washington D.C. in 1987. During Coming Out Day activities, students receive small packs of Skittles and stickers of the queer flags.
The GSA also organises events like AIDS Awareness Day, featuring speakers such as Bobby Leonards and Brandy Andrews. These events aim to increase awareness and foster a sense of solidarity within the school community.
The GSA's impact extends beyond student support, contributing to greater visibility, community building, and advocacy within the LGBTQ+ rights movement. It helps establish safer and more affirming spaces across educational campuses, following in the footsteps of pioneers like Sylvia Rivera, who made her mark at 17.
The first club that functioned as a GSA went by the acronym G.I.Y.S. (Gay International Youth Society) and was formed in George Washington High School in the 70s.
