Here's a fresh take on the empowering changes to career guidance in Lower Saxony's schools:

A Shift Toward Clarity and Collaboration

Lower Saxony's Minister of Education, Julia Willie Hamburg, is spearheading an overhaul in career guidance, recognizing the need for greater clarity and collaboration in helping young students shape their future paths. Acknowledging that many students graduate school without a clear career direction, this innovative update aims to foster a more hands-on and personalized approach to career guidance.

The New Decree: Bridging the Gap Between Education and Employment

In a bid to secure a skilled and future-proof workforce, the new decree will introduce numerous reforms to secondary education:

  • Grammar schools will introduce an additional mandatory internship for students between grades 5 and 10 (secondary I level)
  • Vocational grammar schools will make the previously optional internship mandatory from August 2026
  • The number of practical days for career guidance at all schools will increase from the current 25 to 35 days
  • Schools will forge closer ties, working together general and vocational schools
  • Collaboration between schools and external partners (businesses and universities) will be better orchestrated
  • Schools will gain greater autonomy in designing internships tailored to individual students' needs

Setting the Stage for a Successful Professional Future

Julia Willie Hamburg hopes this revised decree will serve as a catalyst in securing skilled workers and smoother transitions into training and studies. Schools can implement the decree from the new school year, with full compliance expected from the school year 2026/2027, supported by training resources.

A Welcomed Move for the Lower Saxony Business Community

The Employers' Association of Lower Saxony Metal (Niedersachsenmetall) and the Chamber of Industry and Commerce of Lower Saxony (IHKN) both applaud the new changes, eager to support schools and students in achieving a successful professional future. Meanwhile, questions remain regarding the schools' capacity to deliver stellar career guidance and the consistency of quality across various school types.

As the new decree unfolds, the dedicated cooperation between schools, businesses, and the government will play a pivotal role in nurturing the next generation of Lower Saxony's workforce. This collaborative effort will ultimately help future professionals adapt to evolving industry demands and contribute positively to the local economy.

The new decree in Lower Saxony schools, which emphasizes cooperation and internships, will boost the vocational training of students, fostering personal growth and enhancing their education-and-self-development in preparation for the workforce. This collaborative approach between schools, businesses, and the government will facilitate mutual learning and enable future professionals to align their studies with industry demands, thereby promoting successful personal growth and leading to a skilled and future-proof workforce in Lower Saxony.
