New Anti-Scam Website Launched in Kentucky to Protect Residents
Kentucky residents now have a powerful new tool to help them stay safe from scams, with the launch of the StopScams.ky.gov website. This one-stop resource, announced by Governor Andy Beshear, aims to provide quick access to information on how to identify scams, report them, and recover lost funds.
The website is the result of a collaborative effort among various agencies, including the Public Protection Cabinet, the Better Business Bureau, AARP, and Team Kentucky. The partnership aims to expand educational efforts across the state and empower citizens with the knowledge and tools to reduce the impact of scams.
Commissioner Marni Rock Gibson of the PPC's Department of Financial Institutions highlighted the importance of the new website, stating that it will serve as a trusted source of information on active scams in Kentucky and how to avoid them. AARP Kentucky Volunteer State President, Gary Adkins, concurred, emphasising its significance in protecting Kentuckians, particularly older adults and Veterans, from increasingly sophisticated scams.
The website is designed to be easy to use, with access to real-time scam alerts, tools for easy reporting of scams, and resources aimed at protecting vulnerable groups. Users can also sign up for scam alerts through email or text message to receive timely warnings about new types of fraud targeting Kentuckians.
The message of the website is clear: "Pause, check, and protect" when dealing with unknown contacts or companies. This initiative builds on Governor Beshear's previous focus on preventing scams as the state's Attorney General, and is considered an essential tool in the fight against scams.
Secretary of the Public Protection Cabinet, Michael Brown Perry, stated that scammers will go to great lengths to steal money, and it's crucial to identify scams early to protect both financial and emotional wellbeing. BBB President and CEO Reanna Smith-Hamblin expressed gratitude for the opportunity to work with Team Kentucky and AARP on the new website, looking forward to a continued partnership.
