Enhance Your Mac Notes with This Powerful Alternative to Notepad, Granting Extraordinary Stickiness to Your Notes

The Lowdown on Antinote: Your Swiss Army Knife for Mac Notes

When it comes to jotting down ideas, outline articles, or creating quick task lists on a Mac, Apple Notes is hard to beat. But when a basic scratchpad is what you need, you might miss it. That's where Antinote steps in, offering a sleek and feature-rich experience that's perfect for power users and casual note-takers alike.

In my workflow, I find myself yearning for a tool like this. Antinote absolutely nails it, with a beautifully designed interface, Pomodoro timer functionality, and foreign currency conversion - features that will excite power users. And the best part? It comes with a seven-day free trial, after which you can buy the app for a one-time fee of $5.

Antinote: A Workflow Game-Changer

Once installed, the first thing you should do is familiarize yourself with the app's keyboard shortcut for launching it quickly. The default shortcut is Option-A, but you can customize it to your liking in Settings > Shortcuts > Global Hotkey. I've set up my own shortcut for seamless integration into my workflow.

You might not even need the shortcut, as you can pin Antinote to your screen, keeping it in a floating window above other apps. However, when using any app in full-screen mode, Antinote will disappear. In such cases, using the shortcut proves incredibly useful.

After installation, you'll want to make Antinote your own. Head to Settings > Visuals to customize the app's appearance. If you're like me and prefer to keep your menu bar organized, consider switching to Barbee for better menu bar management. Sometimes, I make Antinote a "headless" app, meaning it only appears when I use the keyboard shortcut to launch it.

Unlocking Antinote's Secrets

Antinote employs keywords to enable various features in notes. Adding a keyword like 'timer' at the top of a note displays all the necessary commands to activate a timer. For example, typing 'timer 5' initiates a five-minute timer, while 'timer pomo' starts a Pomodoro timer for 25 minutes work, followed by a five-minute break. Other keywords include 'math' for calculations, 'paste' for clipboard history storage, and 'list' for creating checklists. Check out the Keywords tab in the app's settings to memorize or customize these keywords.

Antinote includes several keyboard shortcuts for managing your notes efficiently. My favorite feature, however, is the ability to switch between notes using swipe gestures on your Mac's trackpad. Swipe left with two fingers to start a new note, and swipe right to navigate to the previous one. This makes it a breeze to go through your entire note history.

Antinote also automatically saves all your notes, but if you want to share a note with others, simply click the share button in the lower-right corner of the app window and save it as a txt file in a folder of your choice. Unfortunately, there's no real-time collaboration feature.

Antinote's Hidden Gems

Beyond functioning as a note-taking tool, Antinote also has some useful add-ons, such as text extraction from screenshots using optical character recognition (OCR). To take a screenshot and have Antinote extract the text, use the default macOS screenshot shortcut (Command-Control-Shift-4) to capture the image and then paste it into Antinote.

I also appreciate Antinote's distraction-free user interface, which hides buttons until the cursor approaches the top/bottom of the window. It displays only the essentials, making note-taking smooth and uncluttered. One of the interface buttons is the global search button, which lets you search through all your Antinote notes for quick access.

Lastly, you can set up auto-deletion schedules in Settings > Notes for temporary notes or clear your notes daily/weekly/monthly, depending on your preference. The app also supports multiple themes, available under Settings > Visuals. Adjust the window size, font scaling, and canvas style according to your display setup for optimal productivity.
