Fresh Tack: Carpentry Meets Business

Two dynamic individuals, Sigurður Brynjar Pálsson and Sölvi Steinn Sigurðsson, are learning the rope of carpentry at FB's evening school. These father and son duo have already penciled in plans to join forces and build a cozy guesthouse at their summerhome next summer.

Byko's Steady Hand

"I've always fancied the DIY approach, especially when it comes to home repairs or countryside maintenance, which is where our summerhouse resides. My workwear essentially never leaves my back at the summerhouse, as I find it therapeutic to switch gears from my daily corporate responsibilities," shares Sigurður, who, despite being the CEO of BYKO, once logged hours sweating it out in construction.

Business Savvy by Nature

Sölvi, 21, is busy studying business at the University of Iceland. Like dad, he too harbors a passion for the crafty side of life. "I've always had a knack for DIY projects and manual labor. At first, the idea of studying carpentry didn't seem appealing, but when Dad suggested we enroll together, I figured, 'Why not?' It's not just a quality time with Dad—it's education that always pays off," Sölvi explains.

So, what's it like juggling business studies and carpentry classes?

"It's like a dream combo! Stepping away from the books for some hands-on action feels fantastic. It's challenging to divide time between the two, but staying organized and adopting a positive mindset is key," Sölvi affirms.

Shared Learning

Studying together as father and son may seem unusual, but this duo feels right at home. "It's a special experience, but we have nothing but fun! I get to see a different side of Dad, and we're spending top-notch quality time together. It's a win-win!" Sölvi beams, with the old man agreeing wholeheartedly.

"Our bond has always been strong and friendship-centric. Sharing this educational journey has been a delight. Traditionally, parents coach their kids, but in our case, we exchange ideas and provide feedback in class. It's been incredibly rewarding," Sigurður shares.

Learning Beyond the Textbook

"The coursework is challenging but thrilling! The hardest part has been grasping three-dimensional thinking, but the foundation courses have pushed my cognitive boundaries. They have made me think about buildings in a whole new light," Sigurður confesses.

The most intriguing surprise? "The diversity of the course! It appears tailored for people of all skill levels and experiences. Even though I came with minimal carpentry knowledge, I managed to help build a summerhouse with a skilled team that winter," Sölvi discloses.

Father and son are gearing up for their graduation in fall 2023. Sigurður is aiming for a bachelor's degree and might bump it up with a Master's program. This new education will undoubtedly enrich construction work at BYKO, helping him better comprehend the challenges customers face and offer expert solutions.

In his personal life, the carpentry skills will be invaluable, allowing him to tackle maintenance and projects at home with confidence. As for Sölvi, he's optimistic that his carpentry education will prove useful in his future career, be it in carpentry, construction, or even the family business.

"Every bit of education you acquire can only strengthen you and broaden your perspective. Carpentry will undeniably benefit me at work and will help me tackle everyday challenges in my personal life. It's been a joy reviving my student days and meeting some fantastic people from all walks of life," Sigurður concludes.

Sölvi, despite being a young scholar, echoes the same sentiment. "My carpentry skills will surely come in handy in the future, be it in my professional or personal life. I don't know what lies ahead, but who knows, the 'Fathers on Tour' concept could take flight one day! It's not a bad idea to have a business degree on my resume," Sölvi smiles.

  1. Sigurður, despite being the CEO of BYKO, has a strong interest in carpentry and DIY projects, a passion that he shares with his son, Sołvi.
  2. Sołvi, currently studying business at the University of Iceland, finds a blend of academics and hands-on carpentry classes invigorating and believes it offers a unique learning experience.
  3. Sigurður and Sołvi value the opportunity to learn carpentry together as it provides them with top-quality time and a chance to see different sides of each other, fostering a deeper bond.
  4. Both Sigurður and Sołvi view their carpentry education as a valuable investment that will benefit them in both their personal lives and future careers, opening up a range of opportunities and equipping them with crucial problem-solving skills.
Carpentry students, Sigurður Brynjar Pálsson and Sölvi Steinn Sigurðsson (father and son), are honing their craft at FB's night school. Their shared educational journey has been enjoyable, and they anticipate constructing a guesthouse at the family's summerhouse during the upcoming summer, collaboratively.
