Düsseldorf and Chemnitz mayors, Dr. Stephan Keller and Sven Schulze, convened in Chemnitz's sister city to assess their 35-year partnership, slated for celebration in 2023, and discuss prospects for future collaborative projects.

Enduring Relationship Spanning Years

"Alright mate, Chemnitz and Düsseldorf go way back, ya know? They got a bond that's stood the test of time, with numerous joint projects under their belts," Keller shared. "One of the next biggies? Chemnitz stepping up to represent Germany as the European Capital of Culture in 2025."

The partnership between the two cities, forged in 1988, carries significant historical weight for Düsseldorf. Post-Berlin Wall, they lent a helping hand to help set up self-administered governance in Chemnitz. Today, the two city administrations maintain contact on key issues and have spearheaded various joint projects and exchanges.

Last year, the first trainee exchange took place, with three trainees from each city learning the ropes of the partner city's administration. This exchange is set to continue, with the aim of strengthening the bond on administrative and societal levels.

"Our 35-year friendship ain't guaranteed - I'm bloody grateful for it," Chemnitz Mayor Sven Schulze declared. "We're stoked that the partnership's being passed down from generation to generation through shared experiences."

Keeping democracy and fighting right-wing extremism at the forefront, plans for 2023 involve fostering a joint school working group, as well as maintaining an intensive sports exchange. Düsseldorf boxing clubs participate regularly in Chemnitz's international tournament.

While details on a specific collaboration between the two cities were limited in the files I scoured, both cities have the potential to collaborate in cultural exchange, educational initiatives, and projects promoting democracy. They could team up to enrich each other's cultural scenes, enhance educational opportunities, and foster democracy-promoting initiatives within Europe.

"As the relationship between Chemnitz and Düsseldorf continues to thrive, they are exploring new ways to collaborate beyond administrative and societal levels. There's a potential for these city administrations to work together on cultural exchange programs, education-and-self-development initiatives, and projects that promote democracy, aiming to enrich each other's lifestyles and further strengthen their bond."

"Moreover, with the upcoming European Capital of Culture status for Chemnitz in 2025, it presents an opportunity for both cities to showcase their unique cultures, foster relationships, and educate each other on their diverse traditions, contributing to a richer understanding of each city's lifestyle and history."
