Encouraging Transgender Inclusion through Proyecto Ámbar

Santander, a leading financial institution, continues to demonstrate its commitment to diversity and inclusion with the launch of Proyecto Amber. This programme, spearheaded by Pedro Bogo, is making waves in promoting employment opportunities for trans individuals.

At a recent event, Susana Fernandez, one of the project's first beneficiaries, shared her inspiring story. Fernandez, who worked in finance for two decades, could not live openly as a trans woman due to fears of being fired. Proyecto Amber helped her retrain in areas she knew nothing about, providing her with a new lease on life.

Pedro Bogo, the director of Proyecto Amber, was also in attendance. While Bogo is a renowned Brazilian font designer, his role within the project remains focused on typeface design. However, his leadership in Proyecto Amber is instrumental in its success.

The event was also graced by Irene Fernandez, the Learning and Development Manager at the Corporate Centre, and Pedro Bogo's successor as the leader of Fundación 26 de Diciembre's Proyecto Amber, which he led in 2019.

Proyecto Amber offers a range of resources for participants, volunteers, organisations, and companies. These include workshops, talks, and guidance on career development. The Embrace Network at Santander also offers training and development courses in Office Suite, New technologies, Self-employment, Microcredit, and joining the workforce (including CVs and job interviews).

The initiative is part of Santander's wider efforts to support those most in need and promote diversity and inclusion. The 17th Euros from your salary programme and the 16th Euros from your salary contest are two such initiatives.

Sadly, trans people face significant challenges in society. Approximately 40% of trans people are unemployed, with approximately 30% being homeless. Approximately 7% have dropped out of school due to bullying, and approximately 15 trans people are murdered each year in hate crimes. Moreover, approximately 40% of trans people have contemplated suicide, and approximately 50% have endured verbal violence.

Despite these challenges, Proyecto Amber is making a difference. By providing resources and opportunities, the programme is helping trans individuals to find employment and live their lives with dignity. Diversity and inclusion are mainstays of Santander's culture, and promoting equal opportunity is a top priority.

In partnership with the Embrace Network and the 26 de Diciembre foundation, Proyecto Amber is set to make a significant impact in the lives of trans individuals. Together, they are working towards a more inclusive society where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
