Death Notice for Ruth Weiss

Ruth Weiss, a woman born in Fürth in 1924, lived a life that was marked by adversity and courage. Her early years were marked by the turmoil of the Nazi dictatorship, forcing her to flee her home to escape persecution and the horrors of the Shoah.

This tumultuous start to her life shaped her deeply, leading her to become a journalist and a fierce advocate for democracy and humanity. She spent her childhood in Fürth and later faced racism as a refugee in Johannesburg, South Africa. These experiences served as the foundation for her lifelong commitment to fighting against all forms of racism and injustice.

Throughout her career, Ruth Weiss used the power of the written word to expose abuses, let facts speak for themselves, and make them clear and distinct. She believed that her readers could draw their own conclusions and be motivated and encouraged to act after reading her articles.

For over three decades, Weiss visited schools and churches in Osnabrück to speak against racism and promote understanding between peoples. Her actions were guided by principles of humanity, tolerance, truth, and justice. It is no wonder that the city of Osnabrück honours her not only as a witness to history and a traveler between worlds, but also as a moral authority.

In 2025, Weiss published her book, "Remembering Means Acting. My Century of Life for Democracy and Humanity", which detailed her life's work and her weapon against injustice: writing. Her last visit to Osnabrück was on September 2nd, 2022, where she delivered a greeting speech at the 40th anniversary of the "Action Center for the Third World" and signed the Golden Book of the city of Osnabrück.

On September 15th, 2022, the woman who fought against racism and for understanding among peoples was laid to rest at the Jewish cemetery in Münster. Her life story and work serve as a strong example for humanity and reconciliation, a testament to a life dedicated to making the world a better place.
